Scholarships are more in need today that in decades past. The global recession has affected the U.S. in a big way, causing millions of jobs to be lost. Many students parents have been laid off or downsized, making paying out of pocket for a good college tuition even more difficult and in many cases impossible.

And as we know, scholarships (as opposed to student loans) never need to be repaid. Scholarships are a sort of grant; an investment in our collective future. The good news is that there are in fact an abundance of scholarships awarded each year. The task then is for students to do their research (“homework”, if you will) and find the scholarship that is best for them. Then it’s a matter of applying for the scholarship and hoping for the best.

Government scholarships are one of the best scholarships available today. This is money that comes from Uncle Sam. But as we have said – the key is to locate these needle in the haystack government scholarships and do all that one can to get one’s foot in the scholarship door.

Consider all the benefits of a college education: the chance at a successful and more rewarding life, never having to ask, “would you like fries with that?”, the possibility to set career and life goals and then working hard to achieve those goals, and the chance to one day give back to the world and contribute towards a college scholarship fund, and thereby completing a circle of life kind of thing.

But again, the key is to locate these scholarships. A good place to begin one’s search is online or with a guidance counselor and financial aid specialist. There is nothing wrong with student loans, but with these unfortunately students exit college and begin their careers already in debt. Therefore, the scholarship route is much preferred.
